Ok. I was wondering how the Democratic party was going to screw things up but my imagination wasn’t fertile enough to conjure up this Obama/Hillary Martin Luther King deal. Holy Sh*t.

In case you missed it, and it’s too late and I’m too lazy to insert hyperlinks, Clinton over the weekend said that King was an inspirational figure who helped open America’s eyes to the civil rights struggle but that it was an elected politician, specifically Lyndon Johnson, who signed into law the sweeping Civil Rights Act of 1964. Her point, not made very subtly, was that big talk is one thing but that implementing big talk into laws and reform was the work of an experience pol like her, and not like the fledgling Obama. Barak couldn’t resist the temptation to fire back, effectively accusing Hillary of diminishing the reputation of the martyred Dr. King. Bill then chimed in, Edwards got involved (naturally taking Obama’s side) and things went sideways in a hurry. A prominent black Clinton supporter even made a veiled reference to Obama’s youthful drug experimentation.

So when the dust settled, the 2 most prominent Democratic candidates were fighting a surrogate battle between two long dead figures of the 60’s. Why is this particular pissing match a big deal? Because it’s occurring at a time when independents and even Republicans were starting to warm up to the idea of voting Dem in this particular election cycle, voting for change, a unifying message, hell, voting for ANYBODY who didn’t have the stink of Bush all over him or her. And now this. Confirming the long standing suspicion that the Democratic Party is a party that’s solely about gender, race, and sexual identity, the albatross that has held back Democratic dominance since the 60’s. If the Dems once again seize defeat from the jaws of victory in ‘08, you can trace their collective loss to this sorry ass and meaningless exercise in “identity politics”.

  1. Is it really change we want or improvement. Anyone can represent a change, and change can be good or bad. Which one of them is promoting an improvement?

  2. I agree with you Stacy it is painful to watch. In my opinion it is wrong to twist someone’s words around to make them appear racist as is happening to Hillary. OTOH don’t throw in the towel yet there is lots more to come.

  3. I completely agree Stacy, typical Democrats taking the bait on going after one another… totally lame. Let’s the righties have a freakin field day with us. As much as I like Obama personally, (Edwards being my candidate of choice), I have to go to Hilary when it’s between the two, because I honestly don’t think Obama would get elected in the general. There’s just too much for the right wing to rip him apart with (coke use, Muslim school ties, being Black). As lame as that is, I think it’s true and I am not willing to take the chance of another Republican in the White House.

I happened to have the radio on 1700 when I got in the car this morning (from listening to your show on the way home) and when I turned it on this morning, it was Mark Larsen interviewing Dunkie Boy… omg he is such a freaking embarassment of a representative. Every time I hear or see him, I cringe. He was on this morning talking about how he is still a viable candidate… that is definitely a quality that I look for in a representative…delusional. When will he go away?? I have already contacted the Democratic opponent for his seat to let him know I will help his campaign in any way possible.

  4. PS I personally am not for the time change for your show. I get off at 5 and sometimes work late, past 6 and hate to miss the first hour or so as it is.

    Just my vote. :)

  7. Is it any wonder some people stay home on election day? God help us. This rift between Clinton and Obama reminds me of schoolyard bickering among children. What the Democrats need to do is stop trying to one-up each other and realize that they have lost what used to be their base, The working man and woman of America. While the passage of the civil rights law was an Important event in our history,
it does no good for a man to be on a level playing field with his peers if the jobs he wants continue to be outsourced overseas and the jobs left over can barely support him and his family.

  9. Say something, Stacy! I think people lose the habit of coming by if there are no new entries. Don’t forget there are lurkers who seldom post.
