Fish Head…if you equate intellect with money then you are right up there with Bush. I didn’t go to college but I can still put a sentence together and EVEN enjoy being around others with higher IQ’s. You learn more that way. It’s human thing. Lorelei wasn’t bragging…she was stating the facts. While your living in dream land with your thriving business we won’t be crying for you when you hit the big downturn. Since Bush tried to copy the trickle-down theory he had to suddenly change it to the dribble-down theory. Put on your raincoat cos the piss is gonna hit the fan. The last man standing won’t be you. Mutt - Thanks for the post. I have to admit a great bias against Buckley, formed over the decades because of my frustration with his positions against voting rights, for McCarthy and the Vietnam War, etc. At some point — 20 years ago!? — out of frustration (and yes, rage) I decided the best thing was to just stop reading his stuff, and I hadn’t been aware of his reconsiderations on some of these issues.

Perhaps I’ll need to do a little review on recent Buckley info, and maybe revisit the basic revulsion I’ve developed over the decades against The William.

On the other hand, it feels a little like the turnaround Lee “Willy Horton” Atwater did when he apologized for his gross misdeeds after finding out he was dying of an inoperable brain tumor. I would find it easier to forgive these guys if I felt there was any positive effect on their political progeny.

Instead, the right-wing-blowhards just continue to spew the worst Buckley ever had to offer…

Mr. Finger, if English is your first language, I feel really sorry for you. And, yes, I did well in math too. My job is highly technical and I continue to use math every day. You completely missed my points: We (not including you) don’t always agree with eachother, but we are respectful. I would be happy to disagree with you if you weren’t so damn rude and condescending. Did he change his mind over the years? Yes, he did - a stance that is now verboten among “conservatives” and denigrated as “flip-flopping”:
Buckley said that he now wished that the United States had never become involved in Vietnam to begin with, and added that he would still oppose the passage of the Civil Rights Act but not in the same terms or for the same reasons as he had then.
So the most influential conservative of his generation endorsed both the Vietnam and the 2003 Iraq wars, and came to regret doing both.
One of the great divides within conservatism today is between those conservatives who think war can solve problems and that government needs to be “heroic” and those who are skeptical of both arguments. These past few years have persuaded me that war, while sometimes necessary, even essential, is in fact the natural, long-term enemy of conservatism - because it enlarges government and destroys freedom and fans those emotions that most cloud skeptical reasoned judgment. Pre-emptive war, without any plans for the aftermath, may perhaps be the antithesis of every conservative impulse known to history. Pre-emptive war to seize non-existent WMDs is almost a text-book example of conservatism repealing itself.
I plead guilty in retrospect, but am reassured that changing one’s mind in the wake of new facts is not a crime or a sin. It is a conservative virtue - and one that Buckley, alas, didn’t share with most of his successors. Can you imagine Hugh Hewitt ever conceding that he was once mistaken?

Sometimes I just like to sit and read what other people write - it’s a good way to learn, however when I get to Mr. Finger’s comments, it just brings out the worst in me. It’s not that he disagrees with us, in fact, most of us don’t always agree with each other, for example, last week’s Palestenian/Isreael discussion, but we’re respectful of one another. He’s so insulting and condescending. Plus there’s the fact that his grammar, spelling and punctuation skills are horrible (not that I’m perfect, but I did pay attention in English class), and sometimes I just can’t figure out what he’s trying to tell us.

I’m against censorship too, but if you’re taking votes, I say block him.

It’s repulsive Mr. Fishfry that you try to make a name for yourself on a simple blog while we are worrying about a lot of more important things in life. I suggest that you get one so I can quit insulting you after you’ve quit insulting us. To put it simply…Stacy has a talk show, he has a blog for ideas. You inject your venom into the conversations not to debate but to just be a friggin pain in the ass. Please go back to kindergarten if any of this is confusing.

actually, dipfish serves as a useful reminder on how simple minded and obnoxious the oppo has become. As if we need a reminder. I come across folks I disagree with a lot, (im deeply uninterested in preaching to or listening to the converted, progs bore the hell out of me, tho i enjoy Stacy’s take & way with words, obviously) ones who can frame an actual argument get fewer & fewer. Im not the kind who slows down & gawks at car wrecks, tho, so if this particular example of nitwittery were to vanish, its not like i’d miss him. I WOULD like to see a coherent …..”rightie”? What the hell ARE these clowns, anyway? Not conservatives, certainly: actual conservatives DOUBT- thats why they stand athwart History & yell STOP! to quote WFB. Doubt is not to be found in this new generation of crackpot absolutists.
Did anyone catch Colberts juxtaposition of WFB & OReally the other night? A funny exemplar of a dipfish versus a actual thinking conservative. The latter contributes nothing, the former the basis for a good argument…..
