Ok. A quick addendum to my post below. Here are a few more websites worth visiting for alt-takes on the news. And how could I have ommitted RollingStone when mentioning current events mags. Matt Taibbi’s pieces are worth the subscription price alone. His profane, no-bullshit P.O.V. is rivalled only by Mark Morford of www.sfgate.com

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/campaign2008

http://www.liveleak.com/

http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/263.html

Also, while Marshall McLuhan (a confession: I never “got” him) was required reading in college, the book that introduced me to “new journalism” was Harlan Ellison’s obscure classic The Glass Teat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Glass_Teat) It hit my pot-addled brain like a Hendirx guitar solo.

Also, if you have no understanding of general semantics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_semantics), stop everything and return to “GO”. It explains the language barrier between man and reality.

Also required reading in the era of televison is Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Postman), brought to you by the same guy who brought you LBJ’s infamous “daisy” campaign ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKs-bTL-pRg). Still can’t believe Johnson recited the line “We must all love each other or die” when the Beatles were still singing “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

  1. Harlan Ellison spoke at my highschool (Poway) in about 1971.
While I do not remember exactly what it was about (I think it was science fiction writing and philosophy of life) I do remember it left quite an impact with me back then.

    Thanks for the links Spike.

  3. I found this today on the Huffington Post. It’s mutt’s friend Andrew Sullivan saying the bushies better not leave the country or they’ll be indicted on war crimes. Let’s hope he’s right. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/06/andrew-sullivan-bush-admi_n_95305.html

  4. I got sort of used to getting most of my news from KLSD. It gave me something to contribute on the blogs. God, I miss listening to Stacy and the crew on my way to work, waking up in bed… It really took the sting out of going to work. Your sketches were so funny that I could make people laugh just by telling about them. Enough nostalgia.

I guess I don’t actively look for the news. I don’t trust conventional media. Bloglinks usually carry me where I need to go to fill in the blanks. But thanks for the link to the Rolling Stone. If Playboy can have good articles, (like 16-year old boys care,) then why couldn’t the Rolling Stone be …

It was good to hear Hillary on the tonight show, courtesy of the above link. A tacet endorsement by Jay seems to be a good predictor of success. She sure sounded good to me.

This outfit is getting started, sounds like what we are talkin about here…

Mediachannel.org is one of many places to go for news and views that are not shaped by corporate or political party concerns of owners. It is a grassroots owned media network. Bill Moyers and Walter Cronkite are on the advisory board.

  9. Thanks for the taste of Van Morrison today Stacy. It sounded great! But I really thank you for bringing Ms. Silva’s first lawyer on. It’s incredible how the Oceanside PD can circle around one of their own in such an morally reprehensible way. Obviously no toxicology report was done on the maniac who shot this poor woman and her son. But they’re looking for anything they can find to discredit Ms. Silva. I would like to think that SDPD would not have behaved in the same way.

Despite superficial resemblances to the Foley case, this is clearly a completely different animal. Foley was probably as high as a kite and exhibiting speed and recklessness. This woman was the victim of a bad driver. Her only mistake was telling off the dickhead cop who nearly wrecked her car when he cut her off. Everybody knows it is a bad idea to confront other drivers. You never know who may have a gun, may want to chase you, what have you. A lot of people have serious anger issues, especially associated with driving. But it’s not always easy to take the higher moral ground.

Obviously, this cop is the kinda guy that thinks the rules don’t apply to him and is probably used to his buddies backing him up. Still, the fact that he started shooting from his vehicle without any attempt to signal the other driver speaks volumes for his mental state. Citizens should call for a complete investigation into why this off-duty criminal was allowed to go home after this potentially deadly altercation. Ir defies belief that the Oceanside PD could possibly try to cast Ms. Silva as a criminal offender.

The War on Democracy - Fri. June 6, 7:30 pm

Film by John Pilger ‘The War on Democracy’ is John Pilger’s first major film for the cinema - in a career that has produced more than 55 television documentaries. Set in Latin America and the US, it explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile.
“The film tells a universal story,” says Pilger, “analyzing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called war on terror”. Archival footage demonstrates how democracy has been wiped out in country after country in Latin America since the 1950’s.

  16. I use this link to find out what going on in the oil wars:

Taliban welcome back an old friend
    By Syed Saleem Shahzad

KARACHI - Like a voice from the grave, legendary Afghan mujahideen leader Jalaluddin Haqqani has emerged from years of silence to boldly launch the Taliban-led spring offensive in Afghanistan, at the same time burying any doubts of a split between his coalition of resistance groups and Mullah Omar’s Taliban.

In a video message released last week and which is only now coming into wider circulation, Haqqani, speaking in his trademark low-pitched voice and with his hair dyed red with henna, called on the people of Afghanistan “to stand up against the US-led forces in Afghanistan and drive them out”.

    http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/JD04Df02.html

Haqqani said the Taliban and their allies in Afghanistan had come up with new plans to fight against NATO, but these did not have any room for reconciliation. “We are geared for war,” Haqqani stated.

“[President George W] Bush and his allies have decided to kill us or arrest us - they consider us as weak and think of themselves as all powerful. They think we have no place left in the world to survive - they think we are destined either to die or to be captured … they think they are wealthy nations, with their money and with half of the world behind them.

“They think they can enslave poor Afghans - bomb us with their planes and gunship helicopters - they think they have everything and we are voiceless - the media are with them and they belittle our resistance. We kill 80 and they report two or one. I promise the Afghan nation that soon we will be victorious,” said Haqqani.

The long speech by the Pashtun leader, who made his name fighting against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s and remains the most-respected tribal figure in southeastern Afghanistan, is the most sophisticated yet of the Taliban’s presentations to Pashtun people.

While capital D Dems will recoil in horror, the rest of us sceptics will find a VERY useful, productive group , mass based, fundimentally opposed to war for profit, torture, usurption of rights….and organized campaigns to get the various pols to do the right ting, something that comes unnaturally hard to most of them. Sign on & see for yourself…..

    Quote of the Day:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”
    – H.L. Mencken

    Fact of the Day:

U.S. policy is at war with itself in Afghanistan. The Afghan army is destroying poppy fields in the service of America’s “war on drugs.” Meanwhile, the American army is fighting the Taliban to protect the Afghan government, and Afghan farmers are paying the Taliban to protect their poppy fields from the Afghan army. Thus, the harder we fight the “war on drugs” in Afghanistan the harder it becomes to win the war against the Taliban. Source: Newsweek, April 7, 2008

    Subject: Bush administration continues lying

Courtesty of Ed Brayton, more evidence of lies from the Bush administration . . .

Our new Attorney General, Michael Mukasey, gave a speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on March 27. In the speech Mukasey asserted that national security secrets would be exposed in court unless the telecom companies that participated in the Bush administration’s warrantless spying program receive immunity for their actions.

    This is a lie.

The FISA law explicitly requires that evidence relating to national security secrets can only be presented in camera (meaning in private, and not in open court) and ex parte (with only the judge and either the plaintiffs or the defendants present).

There is no chance that national security secrets, such as sources and methods, would be exposed to the public. Mr. Brayton provides a link to the relevant text of the FISA Act (see section f).

Mukasey also claimed that the FISA rules prevented the government from monitoring a call between an Al Qaeda safehouse in Afghanistan and someone in the US just prior to 9/11. Mukasey claimed that we might have avoided 9-11 if this call had been monitored. The New York Sun reports that Mukasey got teary eyed when telling this story. But . . .

    Mukasey was telling another lie.

The Bush administration could have had a standing warrant to intercept all calls from this Al Qaeda safehouse to anywhere in the United States, and could have extended this warrant indefinitely. Not only that, they could have begun the surveillance immediately, and gotten the FISA warrant after the fact. You can find the relevant portion of the FISA law, here (see section f).

The Bush administration lies, and lies, and lies. This is why government power must be severely limited, because you can never tell when this power will fall into the hands of people who will lie to achieve their political goals. Fortunately, Congress is still deadlocked in negotiations for a new law to replace FISA. Let’s keep it that way.

Please send Congress another message telling them that FISA is good enough, and no new law is needed. Use your personal comments to tell your elected representatives that you’re aware of the lies told by the Attorney General at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on March 27. Tell them this is all the evidence they should need that the Executive Branch cannot be trusted with expanded powers.

    Send your message here.

  18. Has anyone noticed that there has been no coverage anywhere about border patrol agents going to Iraq? Or am I the only one just hearing about it? An acquaintance of mine — a border patrol agent is leaving for Iraq in July to “train the Iraqui border patrol.” He will be paid $10,000 a month, tax free and he is supposed be there for six months. Am I the only one suspicious about the real reason? Please point me in the right direction for news coverage.

I dont think its any big secret, you could try the news archives on Military.com, Vets for Common sense (linked on the vvaw website) etc. Its a logical move, as they have funding for lots of agents, & they can recruit from a pool who already knows certain things useful in the job.
unlike my day, most of these youngsters are good shots. and of course Marine standard ability with a firearm is pretty good indeed.
The stories I read was the border patrol was looking to RECRUIT in Iraq & Afghan, but I guess if you are looking to have borders like sieves, then the US Border Patrol is qualified to instruct…..

  23. Speaking of the news, I thought channel 10 did a reasonable job of reporting on the newly-released Oceanside Police Department report of the events surrounding the shooting of Rachel Silva and her son.

First, the reporter shook the report in her hand as if it wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on. As the more serious male voice read details of the report as if they might possibly be true, the editor interspersed clips of Michael Pancer discussing important points of the police report. As the version of events told by the police report concluded, they introduced Pancer as the man who would prove this report wrong.

If you read between the lines, you got that nobody in their right mind would ever believe what the police were saying. This type of subversive journalism must be encouraged. It has to be quite subtle to get past the censors. Pancer remarks that there is no real justification for the shooting itself, (other than the weak idea that Ms. Silva was trying to sidewipe officer Dickhead’s car in reverse.) But the report clearly states that she pulled up right next to his car and yelled really, really scary. Then she was belligerent! Working moms gone wild! Why did the officer first display his gun, before he displayed his badge? He admitted that in his report. Road rage encounters don’t have to end in gunfire. Let cooler heads prevail.

There is no way the Oceanside Police Department is goin to win this one. It’s too big. This is probably the biggest local scandal that we will ever see in our lifetimes.

  24. The reports I read and saw on the 11 pm news last night on channel 8 and 7 were the exact opposite. I thought they made it look as if the case is closed – Mom-of-the-year was wrong and the off-duty cop shot her in self defense. That was the first I heard of her sideswiping his car. The lawyer on Stacy’s show didn’t say anyhing about her hitting the car. But, even if its true, it doesn’t justify shooting her or the kid. He should have let her go and let the on-duty police handle it. It will be interesting to see what comes out in court.

  25. well, if someone was waving a revolver at me, i might well sideswipe his car on the way of getting out of there. If you think justice will be done, think again. remember that off duty cop who shot the(unarmed) football player after chasing him for quite a ways? not only was he found to have been acting reasonably, in this brave new banana republic, the gal, backing up to get away from this dangerous headcase, is STILL in jail. And the COP was named Officer of the Year by the suburban stalinists of MADD.
its of a piece with pols tellin you how to raise your kids:a village full of idiots is slowly making anything less than total, abject groveling to Power a crime.
And its not like even the Courts dont recognize this: I beat a seatbelt ticket by saying i didnt want to be shot “reaching for my waistband” by the cop who pulled me over, so I unbuckled & got my wallet out before he got to my car. Yup, said the judges, dismissed.
It used to be just black folk and suchlike lower orders were gunned down/beaten/framed by the State, Suburbia said:” its not ME, besides, them lower orders are always guilty of SOMETHING” Well, as logically as the dawn, people higher & higher up the social ladder are getting the same treatment. Surprise, surprise.
Abu Ghraib came as ZERO surprise to the populations of the Empires more serious gulags…..nothing new here….
And you just have to read the pro headcase cop letters in the Fishwrap to understand this behavior by the police is cheered on in certain sectors, as it torture, secret trials, rendition……and it ALL comes home to roost.

  26. Another great source- a daily read for me- is “Talking Point Memo, mentioned here before. while I can hardly, for cause, detest the Clintons more, I find myself (in spite of myself) liking Mr Obama more, his recent comments re: working class skepticism said nothing I havent heard, 9and thought) for decades. the ……insane? ludicris?insulting? Clinton response is simply the same old crap, warmed over. Josh Marshal, editor of TPM, runs a great piece on it…..

FOR IT, BEFORE SHE WAS AGAINST IT
    Theda Skocpol writes in …

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government — and Bill Clinton — and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues. To see Hillary going absolutely over the top to smash Obama for making clearly more humanly sympathetic observations in this vein, is just amazing. Even more so to see her pretending to be a gun-toting non-elite. Give us a break!
I wonder if she realizes that gaining a few days of lurid publicity that might reach a slice of voters is going to cost her a great deal in the regard of many Democrats, whose strong support she will need if she somehow claws her way to the nomination — and even more so if she does not clinch the nomination. The distribution of “we’re not bitter” stickers to her campaign rallies is the height of over-the-top crudity, and the reports are that very few audience members seem to have much enthusiasm for this nonsense. Not surprisingly, people cannot see the reasons for so much fuss.

Yes, she wants a big break, she desperately wants the nomination she and Bill believe is hers by right. We all know that. But where is her authenticity and her dignity and her sense of any proportion?

This has to be one of the few times in U.S. political history when a multi-millionaire has accused a much less wealthy fellow public servant, a person of the same party and views who made much less lucrative career choices, of “elitism”! (I won’t say the only time, because U.S. political history is full of absurdities of this sort.) In a way, it is funny — and it may not be long before the jokes start.

  28. Comment on ‘required reading.’

Ellison and Korzybski? Or Ellison and Hayakawa?

Ellison’s easy enough to read. And a fun read, at that. A ‘no bullshit’ critique, and all essay length for easy digestion. I read it several times before it got ‘borrowed with extreme prejudice.’

Korzybski’s book (Science and Sanity) might be hard to find. Hayakawa’s stuff is still around, and still valid or acceptable theory at least–but it might seem a little stodgy/weird to younger readers. Chisholm would be impossible to find, so I assume you’d leave that name off the list–although Chisholm was my first exposure to general semantics, back when I was twelve–it’s a long story, and possibly boring, since I did NOT end that episode with an exciting sexual romp.
