Another musical distraction: Scotland’s Orange Juice, best un-sung New Wave band of the post-punk era. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBikNb5oEcU ), paved the way for the Libertines ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4SAY2NhE7Y&feature=related )and so many others. Speaking of the Libertines, sad to see Doherty descend into tabloid Kate Moss induced limbo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Doherty) ( (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqUoPw1nOkc&feature=related). Should have heeded the lyrics of his own songs.  Otherwise this Brit post-punk thing could have staved off the shit storm of Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, endless Eagle’s reunion tours and the rise of corporate rock. I figure most of you don’t give a shit, but I do. And I just paid 39 bucks to renew this domain, so allow my indulgence.

Only Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone can claim heir apparent status to the fabled Hunter S. Thompson in his ability to dumpster dive into the realm of big time politics and still manage to come away with a few pieces of treasure. His latest offering on McCain’s c**k teasing of the jesus freaks is a beautiful melding of keen observation, cynicism and profanity: ( http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/21896154/without_a_prayer )

As you know, McCain and his henchmen are pooping bricks over the near-universal standing ‘O’ that Obama received during and following his recent globe trot, even resorting to comparing the senator’s rousing reception in Berlin to Hitler’s Nuremberg rallies. A new McCain Obama-hates-the-troops television ad strangely coincides with another toxic, viral email recently circulated ( http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/barackobama/a/afghanistan.htm ), both insinuating Obama would rather be shopping for arugula at the Kirkuk Whole Foods Market than shaking hands with mere grunts. Adding to the hilarity is this latest bit of farsical bullshit that hit internet newsstands yesterday: ( http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/10015.html ). Readers of the Shawn Hannity and Free Republic websites have been gleefully engorging themselves on this garbage for 48 hours now and are doubtless about to form a posse if they can muster the energy to drag their collective ass off the cot in mommie’s basement. If you can get passed the the smell of decaying flesh erupting from the carcass of the neocon movement, you might start picking up the scent of desperation now surrounding the McCain campaign.

Interesting, isn’t it, that the party of government-isn’t-the-solution-it’s-the-problem is all about giving your tax dollars away to bail out Wall Street, Big Oil, and Big Pharm (file under Medicare Reform), mortgage lenders, and home builders, but are loath to toss a bone to The Little Guy. Apparently “big” is the operative term as you’ll  recall from last month’s “Bear Sterns is too big to fail” comment right before $30 billion of your money allowed Morgan Chase a chance to buy the bank for $2 a share when it was selling for $57 a share 3 days before.  Now it’s Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae’s turn to belly up to the public trough, in another generous bailout of lenders and home builders (http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/wall-street-socialism). How ’bout those poor suckers who have had their homes reclaimed by the bank? S.O.L., as the old expression goes. See the story in today’s Fish Wrap about foreclosures (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20080720-9999-1n20housing.html)? Note, of course, the snowball effect of a glut of bank -owned properties on the San Diego market have hit Logan Heights and Encanto the hardest? (to our out-of-town readers, those areas are the one folks back east quaintly call “ghetto’s) If that’s happening here in good ol’ Dago, imagine the grief in Youngstown and Detroit. Any government help coming to these folks? Nah. That’s socialism, people, just like that “socialized” health care system Obama keeps talking about. If that damn thing becomes a reality, nobody’s safe from the shadow of Stalin and Trotsky. But there maybe is still a little political power in the proverbial People. Maybe we should change the designation to The Big Little Guy.

A musical interlude, The New Rhythm and Blues Quartet, or NRBQ, singing a song  ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhpKYbRWls8) about a car and a carburetor (http://www.scoot-parts.com/servlet/the-7122/Floater-needle-PHB-carburetor,10g/Detail), a band, like Fleetwood Mac and Genesis, and Steve Miller (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmBDIj2fbB8) who actually were recording when I was still in college and managed to keep it together into the new millennium. Any other suggestions?

Ok the pix thing was a fun break. I think of it as a summer recess. Thanks for contributing. At least now we have a sense of who we each are, visually, now that we have an idea of our thought process. Moving forward….

Afghanistan: U.S. death toll now demands a surge? ( http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/news/stories/200807/s2302552.htm?tab=asia) How  timely! Pacification succeeds in Iraq…troop pull out…but wait!? Time to rotate back into Afghanistan? Huh? In other words, reality rears its ugly head and the once epicenter of the “war on terror” has become a deadly flytrap because of the surge and the zero-sum nature of this war.

Stop the presses: a new terror warning!!! Al-Libi back in the game. Thought we had this evil-doer? Hmmm? How convenient! ( http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1215330940794&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FPrinter)

Meanwhile, Obama still ’splainin’ Wes Clark’s totally right-on remarks about McCain, and McCain now ’splainin’  Phil Gramm (through a surrogate): http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1215330940794&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FPrinter

Gramm was not totally off base. Look around! Is it because I work in La Jolla, or does it seem that there are a shitload of Gen Y’s, Gen X’s, and plain old yuppies still driving hemi’s and having a gay ol’ spending spree? I’ll answer my own question: yes, it’s because I work in La Jolla, where the sale of Campari and Italian sparkling water mask the “other” America as John Edwards put it, exposing Gramm’s, McCain’s and the Repug’s world view while the Toledo’s, Akron’s, Davenport’s, Biloxi’s, and Calexico’s whither and die on the vine.

That’s the essential issue at this moment in political/cultural history. Do we really give a shit about the “little guy” or is it business as usual? Obama? You tell me. His disturbing “move to the center” on issues like Palestine and FISA leave me gasping. Clearly the situation calls for fundamental, radical reform, not a tweaking of the Chimp’s faith-based bullshit. You Dem’s have been sold a bill of goods. You deserve your Feinstein’s and Hoyer’s, alternating bartenders at Good Time Charlie’s Bar and Grill, ignoring the dram shoppe laws  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dram_Shop ) and secretly slipping a little Kool Aid into the slushy. F*** ‘em all. As Dylan once said “All is phony” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T-5gxUIz4Y)

Why do you think I’m posting photo’s on this website???!! Because I don’t want to address the throbbing tumor that keeps me awake at night. Enjoy your weekend.
